Book Review | I Miss Daddy

I was recently contacted by Acacia Slaton Beumer, author of the children's book I Miss Daddy. She had written a book sharing the struggles her daughter Jana was having in adjusting to the fact that her father had been deployed to Afghanistan.

I Miss Daddy is a true story written from the perspective of Jana, a preschool girl who misses her Daddy due to his deployment. Jana misses him, but does not know how to express the pain she feels in her heart due to his absence, so she begins acting out as her expression of grief.

When Jana receives a letter in the mail from her daddy (an actual letter that Jana's father sent her during his deployment), she is finally able to share how she is feeling with her mother and is able to work through the grief she is feeling because of her father's absence.

I truly appreciated this book. Brian and I are huge supporters of our military and their families, but it never really dawned on me how deployment affects the children of our soldiers. This book opened my eyes and heart to the needs that the children of our military men and women have, and the grief they deal with until their daddies and mommies come home.

My 5 1/2 year old connected with Jana immediately and wanted to become friends with her.  We have had nights where Brian has had to work out of town overnight, so she was able to understand on a very small scale what Jana was experiencing and feeling while her father was away on deployment.

I Miss Daddy is a wonderful book to share with our children. If your spouse has been deployed, this book may help your child open up about feelings they are experiencing which may be similar to what Jana was feeling. If you are not a military family, it will cause you and your children to remember to pray for our soldiers and their families.

Disclosure: I was given a free copy of this book for reviewing. However, this review is my own opinion and was not influenced in any way.
