Deuteronomy 18:9-13

Deut. 18:9 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.18:10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.18:11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.18:12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.18:13 Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God. (KJV)

Ephesians 19:14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.19:15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?19:16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.19:17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.19:18 And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.19:19 Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

Recently the author of Harry Potter has come out with a new book and a resulting movie. Many Christians have conflicting views as to whether it is okay or not to read and watch. I have seen friends and students who at one point in their lives would never have looked at a Harry Potter book, now going to see the movies and reading the books. Personally, I have chosen to keep these out of my home. However, what does the Word of God have to say about witchcraft, sorcery, spells, and the like? The above verses show where God stands on the issue regardless of what "morals and values" might be hidden inside.

By clicking on the title of the entry for today, you will be directed to a 700 Club interview with a Christian woman who has researched the occult and its relationship to Harry Potter. I will admit that I could not look at the initial part of the clip as they showed clips of the movie as they are discussing the content of the interview and the debate going on concerning the movie's and book's influence on children. However, when the interviewee comes on, there are no longer any clips from the movie. I realize that this is a very controversial issue. However, I feel that if others are able to express their ideas and feelings in one direction, I have the same right to express my convictions as well.
