Book Review | Where Do Belly Buttons Come From?

Has your child ever asked you where do belly buttons come from?

I was recently asked to review a great book, Where Do Belly Buttons Come From?: The Nonhistorical Truth by Dr. Jeffery Warren Scott, which, as its name suggests, is a nonhistorical truth. It offers parents a sweet way to teach their children that Jesus loves each and every person in the world... because everyone has a belly button.

I loved this story because it is simple. The story line is sweet and follows one train of thought from beginning to end.  It is easy for beginning readers to follow without having too many characters to follow, yet it is a solid story with a great theme running through it- that Jesus loves every person. As a mother who is always reminding my children that Jesus loves them, this book reinforces that concept beautifully.

Having a beginning reader here in our home, I liked the fact that every two page layout has one page of story/words and one full page picture. It breaks up the words so that younger readers are not overwhelmed, and listeners are kept actively engaged because of the colorful illustrations.

My favorite part of the story is the very end. I love how the author turns the story around and asks the child if they have a belly button. This is the perfect way to make a child think about how this story relates to them. And reminds them that Jesus loves them, too!
