Our First Day of School | 2013

In years past, I have started the school year with an idea of how our day would go (like in this post) only to find out that things did not work out the way I had planned them to (like in this follow up post).

This year is a bit different. I have an idea of what I want our day to look like, but I also am allowing this week to be my week of tweaking and adjusting as Addie, Ian, and I learn how to work around our new schedule/routine. It will be different for me having two students and learning how to teach Ian while Addie is doing quiet work and teaching Ian to play quietly by himself while I am working with Addie.

I was looking through and found some OLD videos of Addie learning with me. They are no more than 2 minutes each. Wow, was she little (2 1/2 at the time)!

Have a great first day of school (for my fellow Floridians and Team Mac in New Jersey)!

When do your kids go back to school?

Do you have any "back to school" traditions?

Jesus Is Always with you

My aunt sent this video to me the other day, and WOW was it beautiful and convicting all at the same time.

Somewhere in the back of our heads we know that Jesus is always with us, but it is so easy to forget the He is really ALWAYS with us.

When we are sad, happy, mourning, rejoicing, making breakfast for our families, playing, working, WHATEVER..... He is right there.

I cried as I watched this because of the smile the actor portrays. I could really imagine Jesus rejoicing with us and feeling our pain.

Wherever you are, whatever you are going through, Jesus is always with you.

Our Little Bud | 2 Videos

One of the things we do with our children is teach them how to help clean up their toys. There is nothing wrong with teaching our children responsibility at an early age. Yes, they still need to be reminded as they grow (they are still children), but picking up after themselves needs to be something they are very familiar with.

Below are two videos of our little Bud.

The first video is of Brian and Ian cleaning up Ian's toys before bed time. Yes, Ian put a toy that is not a block into the block case, but the idea is that he is learning how to put toys away. My favorite part is when Ian claps for himself. I love how Brian ends the video, "You're going to be a good helper like your sister."

In this second video, Ian is having his school time. And what you see is pretty much the extent of "school" for him on a daily basis. Actually, I started taping about a minute after his lesson began. He has begun mimicking us as we speak and trying really hard to repeat what we say. Just before I began recording he repeated the word "blue" clear as day! Later in the afternoon while we were watching TV, he noticed that the screen was blue, pointed, and said, "Blue!" We, of course, made a huge deal about that! At the end of the video, you'll see why his "lessons" are so short :) He is only 15 months after all.

Playing | A Video

I remember during my mother's pregnancy of my younger sister Faye, my mother kept telling me that she was going to have a baby and I was going to love this baby, this baby would become my friend, and I would always have someone to play with. At the time, she did not know that she was having a girl (what did they do without ultrasounds!).

I was almost 5 years old at the time, so my knowledge of "reality" was way off.

I remember visiting them in the hospital and looking into the nursery window at my sister in the "fish tank" baby bed.

But what I remember more than anything was my mother bringing Faye home from the hospital and laying Faye in the middle of my parent's full sized bed. That's when I jumped onto the bed and said, "Faye, do you want to play with me?"

Mom had to explain to me that Faye was too little to play and it would be some time before we could really play together.

No problem! I helped with Faye, played with her, and we even have photos at my parent's house of me giving her a bottle.

And my mother was right (as she usually was). I love my sister. She was my first real, true, faithful friend, and although our husbands have taken the first place spot in that area, we are still true, faithful friends.  And I always had my buddy, Faye. As long as I had her growing up, I didn't feel alone.

Fast forward 31 years......

Last year, we spent so much time preparing Addie for Ian, telling her about this baby that was growing in Mommy's belly, showing her the ultrasound, hanging the US pictures in her room, and telling her that she was going to love this baby and would have someone to play with who would always be her friend.

Now that Ian is here, people always ask, "How is Addie with the baby?"

She has been wonderful with him! She plays with him, is Mommy's super helper, holds him while sitting on the couch or floor, and entertains him while I'm making dinner. In fact, sometimes I have to have her give him some room or she might smother her brother with love.  Yet, their interaction has been mainly one sided for the past seven months, because really, what can a seven month old do?

Everything changed on Tuesday when I turned around from cooking to see what Ian was laughing about and why Addie was flying back and forth through the kitchen.

There they were.

Playing together.

Addie was running with a piece of red string in her hand and Ian was trying to chase her in his walker! And boy can he move!

As a mother, this was such a wonderful moment for me. Watching my children play with each other and enjoy each other's company......

..............until Ian started taking Addie's school papers and artwork off of the refrigerator.

A Video

If I am right, the last video you saw of Ian giggling was from this post.

Well, the giggles have continued and are getting heartier and longer and they mostly happen when Addie is around (she is such a funny little girl!).

Earlier this week after our nap time (Addie had her 4 year old appointment earlier that day which wore us out), we were in the kitchen and Addie and Ian were playing together. Suddenly he just started laughing his heart out! Addie had given him the yellow ring you will see and he threw it on the floor and laughed about it. This happened once more before I grabbed my camera.

There are several things I noticed about this video that are either funny or are things that only I would notice.

Here they are in no particular order:
  1. My floor is clean! We don't wear shoes in our house because of little ones and light colored carpet. I realized after he puts the yellow ring in his mouth that I should say something about that :)
  2. A big, huge, overwhelming thank you to my cousin Belinda who originally gave us the walker for Addie when she was a little bitty thing.
  3. You'll see a circle band aid on Addie's arm. She actually had four of them.... one for each vaccine she received earlier in the day. Poor girl. Having to hold her down for them was no piece of cake either.
  4.  "Mom, take a video." Addie is going to grow up to either run her own business or be the boss somewhere. She loves giving directions.... even if you are already doing what she thinks you should be doing.
  5. She was getting over a cold and had a scratchy voice which I love!.... plus the very loud crying at the doctor's office did not help her voice either.
  6. I have no idea what Addie was doing when she was off camera making Bud laugh, but he finds her hilarious.
  7. Addie does a high pitched squeal for Ian's benefit. It only happens a few times (don't worry) and then she moves on to something else.
  8. I love Ian's huge gummy smile!
  9. Addie's hair style is my favorite for her right now. Two side, partial French braids joined together with an elastic.
  10. Addie likes things to be just so. See how she moves the beads on the play area of the walker?
  11. I didn't realize how long Addie's legs were getting until I watched the video! When you see your child everyday, they just kind of grow up around you and you don't even realize it. (sniff, sniff... I'll be okay...)
  12. Ian's going to be a real boy. Watch how he pounds on the play table of the walker and laughs about it!
  13. He loves his Mama! Just look at him bounce/run to me! (my favorite part of the entire video)
  14. "Mom, can you move him over here so he can do that again? I'll move him over here." I must have given her "the look" that I give when she's being bossy.
  15. I do love how right now she starts every sentence with "Mom....."

The Highlight of Her Birthday

Again, this year, we took Addie to Busch Gardens for her birthday. She was determined that she was going to ride a roller coaster and she did.... six times! It was a children's coaster, but Brian and I enjoyed it just as much as she did (we tag teamed with the kids).

Because we had to bring her birth certificate with us for her ticket, the cashier noticed that we were there on her birthday. Addie was given a pin stating that it was her birthday, and we went on our way. At the Sesame Street photo  section, Elmo and his handler noticed the pin and "Elmo" came up with a great idea! Because his show was going to start in a couple of minutes, he "needed" help finding his friends... and he needed Addie's help to find them!

Here is the video of Addie helping Elmo find his friends. It was definitely her moment. And I was so thankful that God had allowed so many things to happen which caused this moment to happen for her.

There is a series of five video posts that I will be putting up today instead of the regulary posted Simplicity post. These post basically show you what I do with Addie and how I use some of the resources we have discussed this week.

Because our internet service is sooooo slow, it has taken me all day Thurday, all night into Friday, and I can only imagine how long it will take today. Be sure to check back throughout the day to see the different videos that we have put together for you.

Have a great Friday!
